Kellogg and the Washington Post say it is best to consume Fruit Loops daily. They have no health concerns. In fact, if you aren’t eating Fruit Loops, then you have a reason for concern. Do not even think of eating horrible cholesterol-raising eggs or filling steak for breakfast. The Heart Association does not recommend that. Instead eat Fruit Loops.
But it is important to know what the ingredients in food do. Here is a list of some of the food dyes that have been linked.
Red dye 40 contains benzene, a known cancer-causing substance.
Yellow 5, which is from coal tar or petroleum, also known as tartrazine, can have several potential health hazards, including:
- Skin irritation: Can cause skin irritation and sensitivity, including hives and atopic dermatitis
- Respiratory issues: Inhaling Yellow 5 can cause breathing difficulties, asthma, or allergy symptoms
- DNA damage: Can damage DNA in white blood cells, which may increase the risk of cancer
- Behavioral changes: In some children, ingesting Yellow 5 has been associated with behavioral changes like irritability, restlessness, and sleep disturbance
- Hormonal impacts: May have negative impacts on hormones and reproductive health
Blue 1, an artificial food dye, has potential health risks, including:
- Allergic reactions: Blue 1 can cause allergic reactions in some people.
- Cancer: An unpublished animal study suggested that Blue 1 may cause kidney tumors in mice.
- Neurological effects: A test-tube study suggested that Blue 1 may affect neurons.
- Genetic defects: Aniline, a component of Blue 1, is suspected of causing genetic defects.
- Cadmium, another component of Blue 1, may: Damage fertility and the unborn child, and is suspected of causing cancer and genetic defects.
- ADHD symptoms: Blue 1 has been linked to ADHD symptoms in children.
- Organ problems: Blue 1 may cause organ problems.
- Bronchial constriction: Blue 1 may cause bronchial constriction.
- Central nervous system (CNS) effects: Blue 1 may have negative effects on the CNS
Some concerns about BHT include:
- Cancer: BHT may cause cancer.
- Allergies: BHT can cause severe allergies and immunotoxicity.
- Reproductive toxicity: BHT can cause reproductive toxicity.
